SPOTTED: OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean GMT Platinum

Today I went to South Coast Plaza (Costa Mesa, CA) to pickup my holiday gift from the OMEGA Boutique, and also to get my OMEGA Seamaster Professional 300M regulated, again.

While I was waiting, I browsed the cases and saw all the watches I was familiar with except one exception: a black Planet Ocean GMT.

When I asked about it, I was educated on what is known as the OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean GMT Platinum (ref. 232.98.44.22.01.001)

It is apparently a limited edition of only eight (8) pieces, and the watch case is platinum along with a leather strap and platinum deployant buckle.

It has a ceramic bezel, but a new 850-platinum LiquidMetal alloy is used to fill in the markers on the bezel, which are then set with diamonds: 12 diamonds on the GMT scale with a triangular diamond at the 12 o’clock position of the bezel.

On top of that, the case has 69 diamonds on the slant edges and another 31 diamonds forming the OMEGA logo on the sapphire case back.

Total: 113 diamonds with a combined weight of 2.69 carats.

The domed crystal, platinum case has a polished black ceramic dial with 18K white gold dial markers and hands.

Of course, the Planet Ocean Platinum GMT is powered by an OMEGA Co-Axial calibre 8615 movement.

I’m not into blingy watches, but this diamond platinum OMEGA isn’t too garish. The diamonds are about as subtle as it can be on a watch.

The watch is quite thick, though. Most people agree that the current line of OMEGA sport watches are a bit thick, but this specific limited edition has a thicker case than others. The diamond settings for the case edges most likely had an influence on the watch thickness.

The leather strap also feels a bit beefier than your standard leather strap. Considering it has to secure a platinum case watch, the strong leather strap is most likely a necessity since it gives the watch a nice balanced feel on the wrist. Of course, a solid platinum bracelet would have been more interesting, albeit more expensive.

At this point in time, this specific piece at the OMEGA Boutique in South Coast Plaza has a price tag of $95,000 USD. There are only eight in the world and the price will vary depending on where the watch is being sold (due to variances in currency).
